Tour Description

Himeji Japanese Gardens

Guided tour of a very special garden.

Thursday 15th or Friday 16th April 2021
Cost: $87

Today we’re off to visit one of the lesser-known attractions in Adelaide – the delightful Himeji Gardens. Himeji in Japan is a sister city of Adelaide. To celebrate this relationship, the Adelaide-Himeji Japanese Garden was developed in the southern parklands of our capital. The garden is the work of Japanese landscape designer, Yoshitaka Kumada, along with a team of volunteers. Like all Japanese Gardens, Himeji is a blend of beauty, tranquillity and symbolism – a slice of Japan in Adelaide!

We have arranged a special guided tour of the garden, conducted by one of Adelaide’s Park Lands Rangers. This means we not only get to enjoy the beauty of the garden, but also get to develop a greater understanding of the meaning behind its design. For example, the stepping stones here are designed using a psychological trick to slow us down and make us take our time.

After the guided tour there is a little time to explore the garden on our own before we depart for lunch. Today’s meal is somewhere a little different – we’re lunching at the Somerton Surf Lifesaving Club! This club is not surprisingly located down by the beach, making for a great setting. This afternoon we return to the south coast, taking in how the countryside is freshening up with the onset of autumn.

We expect to start set-downs in Goolwa at approximately 4.30pm, finishing in Encounter Bay around 5:15pm.
