The charming town of Loxton shines in December. With thousands of dazzling lights, colourful ornaments and sparkling displays creating a magic Christmas spectacle, this is the ideal place to delight in the festive atmosphere! An enormous Christmas tree shines brightly at the centre of town and the local community adorn their homes with colourful fairy lights and Christmas scenes as they embrace the spirit of the Loxton Lights Festival. During our two day break, we also take time to enjoy other highlights of the region. Come and join the festivities of this welcoming Riverland community.
Day One – SATURDAY 5 DECEMBER 2020
(includes light lunch and two course dinner)
We depart after completing home pick ups (limited area*) for our journey to the Riverland. We travel along the South Eastern Freeway through the Adelaide Hills, over the Murray River to Tailem Bend, where we pause for our morning tea.
Travelling along the Karoonda Highway, we stop to view the artwork on the Karoonda Silos. Completed in July 2019, this huge mural is a colourful portrayal of country life and pays tribute to Karoonda’s farming heritage.
It is not long before we reach Loxton, situated on the southern banks of the Murray River. We will enjoy lunch in town at a local café, before visiting the Pines Historic House and Garden. Built in 1909, this historic six-roomed sandstone villa and its contents were bequeathed to the people of Loxton in 2002. Much of the contents remain untouched and there is a great collection to view, including antique furniture, art, silverware and even a family wedding dress. This magnificent property, with its beautifully maintained gardens, gives us an insight into the grand lifestyle lived by the occupants in the early 20th century.
After leaving the Pines, we’ll head to the main street of Loxton where there will be time to browse. The whole community gets involved with the Loxton Lights Festival so you can soak in the festive atmosphere while admiring the beautifully decorated shops and main street.
Our accommodation for the evening is in the motel section of the Loxton Community Hotel Motel (Ph. 08 8584 7266) and we take the opportunity to check into our rooms. We have time to freshen up and relax before having a delicious two course dinner together.
Tonight we will be joined by a guide who will be showing us around the town. Our first stop will be a visit to the Christmas Tree Festival. Many people spend hours designing and decorating their unique and innovative Christmas trees and it is always wonderful to see their colourful and innovative efforts.
As darkness begins to creep in, the highlight of our tour begins – a guided tour of the Christmas lights and displays of Loxton!
In the heart of town, an enormous Christmas tree dazzles and colourful lights illuminate the trees that line part of the main street. Large clusters of homes in residential streets are also adorned with Christmas scenes and coloured light displays, and our local guide leads us to the best exhibits.
Great creativity has been employed to decorate homes with spectacular lights and wonderful handmade displays, and it is a pleasure to share in the enthusiasm of these local residents who have gone to so much effort to create the festive spirit.
One such display, Christmas Wonderland, is in its 35th year and boasts a 250 metre stretch of illuminated structures and lights including a nativity scene in Bethlehem, Christmas Village, Santa’s Boot, Lolly Shop and much, much more.
After a great night we head back to the motel and settle in for a good night’s rest.
Please note: At the time of printing this itinerary, the Loxton Lights Festival program was unavailable. Due to Covid 19 and social distancing restrictions, events previously undertaken as part of the Loxton Lights Festival may not be available this year. While we attempt to follow the itinerary as closely as possible, it may be necessary to make alternative plans should our intended activities not be available.
Day Two – SUNDAY 6 DECEMBER 2020
(includes cooked breakfast and two course lunch)
We begin the day with a hearty breakfast, before farewelling our hosts and driving to Barmera. Here we have a short drive around Lake Bonney before enjoying morning tea.
Continuing west we travel to Waikerie where we stop to view one of the state’s newest Silo Art. These are the first silos in South Australia to be painted on both sides and by two artists! The artworks pay homage to the River Murray and promote the theme ‘healthy river, healthy community’.
Next we visit the very popular Santa’s Cave. From the Nativity to Wonderland, there is something for everyone here that is sure to help us capture the spirit of Christmas! As we browse through Santa’s Workshop, we can also find hand-crafted gifts for family and friends.
Today we will travel along the Morgan/Cadell Road to Morgan, which in its heyday was one of the busiest South Australian River Murray ports. We enjoy lunch here before completing the last part of our homeward journey.
We skirt the edge of the famous Barossa wine region, stopping at some point to stretch our legs, and it’s not long before we arrive in Adelaide. As we are taken home, there is time to reflect on our delightful two day break enjoying the wonderful Christmas atmosphere and festivities of Loxton.
