As redevelopments continue, Monarto it is set to become the largest safari experience outside of Africa. Join us on this popular tour, where we get to ‘meet the locals’ in the comfort of our own bus, take a peaceful cruise on the mighty Murray River and explore the enchanting Barossa Valley.

Day One – FRIDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2022

(includes light lunch and two course dinner)

We depart this morning after completing home pick-ups (limited areas*) and travel through Strathalbyn and Woodchester. It’s not long before we reach Monarto Safari Park where we have morning tea upon entering the park. Since its opening in 1983 as a breeding and pasture area, Monarto has become one of the world leaders in habitat restoration, captive breeding, conservation education and environmental sustainability.

We are joined by one of Monarto’s expert guides who will take us to meet this diverse and sometimes mischievous ‘family’ of animals that represent 50 different species of exotic and native mammals, birds and reptiles. We view them from the safety of the bus on a guided tour, stopping at the different wildlife viewing areas so that we can be in close proximity to the animals.

Many of these animals are vital to regional and global breeding programs, as well as Monarto’s breeding and reintroduction programs which help ensure the long-term survival of threatened species. The success of the park’s breeding program is evident from the births they have experienced over the last 18 months, including chimpanzees, a zebra foal, lion cubs and baby antelopes.

After the tour we return to the brand new Visitors Centre where we enjoy lunch in the café with stunning views over the park. Following lunch there will be some free time to wander around the new centre or revisit some of our favourite animals. This is also the ideal time to join one of the ’Meet The Keeper’ sessions which are scheduled throughout the day.

For those who wish, you can participate in one of Monarto’s spectacular animal experiences: Lions 360 or the Giraffe Safari. (These optional experiences are at an additional cost to this tour. Spots are limited, so please let our office know at the time of booking your tour if you are interested in these extra experiences. We will book a space with Monarto on your behalf and request payment of the additional cost with your deposit. Please note: that these tickets are non-refundable and prices are correct at the time of publication.)

Lions 360 is the only experience of its kind in Australia. Visitors enter through a tunnel and emerge into a purpose built large viewing cage. This gives you a prey’s-eye view into the world of these awesome predators where you are both absolutely safe and within clawing range of the lion pride!  (1 hour 20 mins, $65 experience only, $100 to include lion feeding).

The Giraffe Safari allows you to experience the thrill of hand feeding these majestic animals in a rarely seen, off limits area.  (45 minutes $50).

Mid-afternoon, we take a scenic drive to Mannum, where we check into our accommodation with the wonderful hosts at the Mannum Motel (Ph: 08 8569 1808).

(includes cooked breakfast and two course lunch)

After enjoying breakfast in the motel restaurant, we board our coach and take a short drive to the Maryanne Reserve where we join a delightful morning tea cruise. We can sit back and relax as we journey along the Murray River, admiring the unique scenery of this magnificent waterway. While we enjoy refreshments, our hosts share their knowledge about the birds, plants and other features of the Murray.

When we disembark, we begin our drive through rolling hills and green valleys to the Barossa. With a long history and distinguished heritage this region always welcomes visitors with open arms and an abundance of amazing local produce. Our delicious two course hot lunch today is in the beautiful setting of Angaston.

Before departing, we take the opportunity to visit Gully Gardens, a delightful farm shop with delicious Angaston-grown dried fruit, homemade confectionery, jams and much more. There will be time to taste and purchase some goodies for family and friends or as a treat for ourselves!

Late afternoon, we make our way back through the hills, passing through towns such as Gumeracha and Lobethal. We return everyone home after a wonderful overnight escape, meeting the unique wildlife of Monarto Safari Park.
