Monarto Zoo is one of the largest open-range zoos in the world. More than 500 animals roam in a natural safari-style setting spanning over 1,500 hectares. 2018 saw the continuing success of their breeding program as the zoo celebrated births of a southern white rhino calf, zebra foal, cheetah cubs and a pregnancy for one of their chimps!  On this popular tour, we are taken around to the various wildlife viewing platforms so that we can see the animals, up close, in this protected nature sanctuary. We spend the night in Mannum and the next day enjoy a peaceful morning tea cruise and take a beautiful scenic drive to the Barossa Valley.

Day One – MONDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2019

(includes light lunch and three course dinner)

We depart this morning after completing home pick-ups (limited areas*) and head into the Adelaide Hills. Continuing east through Littlehampton, we reach Monarto Zoo where we have morning tea upon entering the park.

Monarto Zoo is a magnificent open-range sanctuary, home to more than 500 animals from all over the world! Monarto plays a major role nationally and internationally, breeding rare and endangered animals. The species in their breeding programs include giraffes, lions, rhinos, hyenas, chimpanzees and rock wallabies.  A team of zoo keepers, vets and vet nurses care for the zoo’s unique residents.

We have a bus tour with an informative guide from the Zoo who takes us around to the different wildlife viewing areas so that we can be in close proximity to the animals.

After enjoying lunch in the Zoo’s bistro we have some free time to wander around the enclosures and perhaps revisit our favourite animals. Or for those who wish, you can join Monarto’s newest experiences: Lions 360 or the Giraffe Safari (These optional experiences are at an additional cost to this tour. Spots are limited, so please let our office know at time of booking if you are interested in these experiences and we will book a space on your behalf and request payment of the additional cost with your deposit).

Lions 360 is the only experience of its kind in Australia; enter through a tunnel and emerge into a purpose built large viewing cage. This gives you a prey’s-eye view into the world of these awesome predators where you are both absolutely safe and within clawing range of the lion pride!  (1 hour 20 mins, $55pp viewing only or $90pp to include lion feeding as part of the experience. Prices correct at time of publication).

The Giraffe Safari allows you to experience the thrill of hand feeding these majestic animals in a rarely seen, off limits area.  (45 minutes, $45pp. Prices correct at time of publication).

At the conclusion of a wonderful day at Monarto we take a scenic drive to Mannum, where we check into our accommodation at the Mannum Motel (Ph. 08 8569 1808). We have time to relax before coming together for our three course meal this evening.

Day Two – TUESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2019

(includes cooked breakfast and two course lunch)

This morning we awake to the sound of birds along the river and enjoy breakfast in the motel restaurant.

We then board our coach for the short drive to the Maryanne Reserve to join a delightful morning tea cruise.  We can sit back and relax as we journey along the Murray River, enjoying the unique scenery while our hosts tell us about the birds, plants and other features of this magnificent river.

After our cruise we reboard our mini coach and begin our drive across to the Barossa Valley. Our delicious two course hot lunch today is in the beautiful setting of Angaston.

We take the opportunity to visit Gully Gardens, a delightful farm shop with delicious Angaston-grown dried fruit, homemade confectionery, jams and much more. There will be time to purchase some goodies for family and friends, and of course enjoy some ourselves!

This afternoon on our way back to Adelaide we make a short stop at the famous Whispering Wall which is the retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir. The wall has unique acoustic effects, as words spoken at one side can be clearly heard at the other, more than 100 metres away.

We then make our way back into Adelaide’s suburbs and return everyone home after a wonderful overnight escape.
