If you love animals and nature, you don’t have to travel far from Adelaide. Just on our doorstep, Monarto Safari Park provides a unique home to more than 500 animals that are free to roam in a natural safari-style setting spanning over 1,500 hectares. The size of the park is impressive and with plans for redevelopment it is set to become the largest safari experience outside of Africa. Since its opening in 1983 as a breeding and pasture area Monarto has become one of the world leaders in habitat restoration, captive breeding, conservation education and environmental sustainability. Join us on this popular tour, where we get to ‘meet the locals’ in the comfort of our own bus, take a peaceful cruise on the mighty Murray River and explore the enchanting Barossa Valley.

Day One – TUESDAY 13 OCTOBER 2020

(includes light lunch and two course dinner)

We depart this morning after completing home pick-ups (limited areas) and head into the Adelaide Hills. Continuing east through Littlehampton, we reach Monarto Safari Park where we have morning tea upon entering the park.

Upon arrival one of Monarto’s expert guides will take us to meet this big, diverse and sometimes mischievous ‘family’ of animals that represent 50 different species of exotic and native mammals, birds and reptiles. We view them from the safety of the bus on a guided tour stopping at different wildlife viewing areas, so that we can be in close proximity to the animals.

Many of these animals are vital to regional and global breeding programs, and breeding and reintroduction programs, such as those which occur at Monarto, will help ensure their species long-term survival. The success of the parks breeding program is evident in the baby boom they have experienced over the last 18 months including Tasmanian Devils, giraffe calves, chimpanzees, a zebra foal and baby antelopes, as well as the latest additions of lion cubs and a stripy zebra born in 2020.

After the tour we return to the Visitors Centre where we enjoy lunch in the bistro followed by some free time to wander around the enclosures and perhaps revisit our favourite animals or join one of the ’Meet The Keeper’ sessions scheduled throughout the day.

For those who wish, you can participate in one of Monarto’s spectacular animal experiences: Lions 360 or the Giraffe Safari (These optional experiences are at an additional cost to this tour. Spots are limited, so please let our office know at time of booking if you are interested in these experiences and we will book a space on your behalf and request payment of the additional cost with your deposit).

Lions 360 is the only experience of its kind in Australia; enter through a tunnel and emerge into a purpose built large viewing cage. This gives you a prey’s-eye view into the world of these awesome predators where you are both absolutely safe and within clawing range of the lion pride!  (1 hour 20 mins. Prices to be confirmed).

The Giraffe Safari allows you to experience the thrill of hand feeding these majestic animals in a rarely seen, off limits area.  (45 minutes. Prices to be confirmed).

Mid-afternoon, we take a scenic drive to Mannum, where we check into our accommodation with the wonderful hosts at the Mannum Motel (Ph: 08 8569 1808).

Day Two — WEDNESDAY 14 OCTOBER 2020

(includes cooked breakfast and two course lunch)

After enjoying breakfast in the motel restaurant we board our coach and take a short drive to the Maryanne Reserve where we join a delightful morning tea cruise. We can sit back and relax as we journey along the Murray River, enjoying the unique scenery while our hosts tell us about the birds, plants and other features of this magnificent waterway.

After disembarking we begin our drive through rolling hills and green valleys to the Barossa Valley. With a long history and distinguished heritage this region always welcomes visitors with open arms and an abundance of amazing local produce. Our delicious two course hot lunch today is in the beautiful setting of Angaston.

Before departing, we take the opportunity to visit Gully Gardens, a delightful farm shop with delicious Angaston-grown dried fruit, homemade confectionery, jams and much more. There will be time to taste and purchase some goodies for family and friends or as a treat for ourselves!

Our last stop is the famous Whispering Wall. This retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir gets its name from its unique acoustic effects and there may be the opportunity to test it by whispering kind words on one side of the wall, to your friends on the other side, more than 100 metres away.

Late afternoon, we make our way back into Adelaide’s suburbs and return everyone home after a wonderful overnight escape, meeting the unique wildlife of Monarto Safari Park.
