Day One – WEDNESDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2024
Welcome to our enriching three-day exploration of Mount Gambier.
We start our journey from Adelaide and head towards the scenic Tailem Bend, situated near the mouth of the Murray River.
After stopping for refreshments, we continue towards the agricultural heart of Keith, where we’ll stop for a delightful lunch at the Keith Hotel, enjoying the local hospitality.
From there, our route takes us south through picturesque Naracoorte and onto Penola, the oldest town in the Southeast. Here, we visit the Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre, which offers a deep dive into the life and legacy of Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods, co-founders of the Australian Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1866. The centre features extensive exhibitions, the original schoolhouse, and the church.
After absorbing the rich history of Penola and enjoying afternoon tea, we make our way to Mount Gambier. Here, we’ll settle into The Henty (Ph: 08 8725 5800) for two nights, perfectly positioned to explore the region’s volcanic landscapes and unique blue lake.
Day Two – THURSDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2024
Today we embark on a day full of discovery in Mount Gambier, starting with a visit to the Blue Lake Visitors Centre.
Here, a knowledgeable guide will lead us through the Blue Lake Pumping Station, revealing the unique volcanic origins of this lake, its annual transformation from a somber blue to a vibrant turquoise, and its significance to the local folklore and water supply.
Following this, we venture to Umpherston Cave, a century-old sunken garden laid out on terraced grounds. From the viewing platform, take in the expansive view before descending among towering palms and lush plants draping over the garden’s edges – a truly enchanting sight.
For lunch, we’ll dine at Sorrentos Café, housed within the historic old Mount Gambier Post Office, with views overlooking the serene Cave Garden. This garden, originally a vital water source for early settlers, is now a lush centerpiece of the city, fed by the same underground system that replenishes the Blue Lake. Enjoy your afternoon exploring the natural beauty and tranquil setting of this historic site.
Dinner will be served back at The Henty, where you can relax and reflect on the day’s rich experiences.
Day Three – FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2024
As we bid farewell to Mount Gambier, our journey takes us to the enchanting old port town of Robe.
This picturesque town, framed by sparkling aquamarine ocean and quaint streets lined with heritage cottages, radiates charm and historical allure. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to leisurely explore the quirky main street, adorned with boutique shops and welcoming cafes that invite you to indulge in local flavors and crafts.
After our delightful visit to Robe, we make our way to Meningie, known for its tranquil lakeside setting. Lunch at the Meningie Hotel offers a chance to savor delicious regional cuisine, providing a relaxed atmosphere to unwind and reflect on the scenic beauty we’ve experienced.
As the afternoon unfolds, we embark on the final leg of our journey back to Adelaide. This time allows for peaceful reflection on the memorable
three days spent exploring with Endeavour Tours, enriched by natural beauty, cultural insights, and shared experiences.
