Port Lincoln is known as ‘the seafood’ capital of South Australia and the riches of the Eyre Peninsula extend beyond its produce, to the stunning beauty of the area. From calm swimming beaches and sheltered bays to towering coastal cliffs, the peninsula has so much to offer. We head across the gulf on the ferry, cruise the spectacular Boston Bay and visit an oyster farm in Coffin Bay, as well as visiting some of the delightful seaside towns that surround. Join us on this short escape, as we explore the magnificent scenery of Port Lincoln and the Eyre Peninsula.

 

Day One – SUNDAY 23 OCTOBER 2022

(includes light lunch and two course dinner)

Following our home pick-ups (limited areas*), we depart Adelaide and travel over to the Yorke Peninsula stopping on the way for morning tea.

Arriving in Wallaroo we enjoy a light lunch before boarding the Sea SA Ferry that links the Yorke Peninsula and Lucky Bay. The cruise across Spencer Gulf takes about 2.5 hours, so sit back and relax, taking in the views as we journey to the Eyre Peninsula.

We disembark in Lucky Bay and join the Lincoln Highway, heading directly to Port Lincoln. Our arrival  at our accommodation will be in the early evening, a little later than normal. For the next two nights we will be staying at the  Port Lincoln Hotel (Ph. 08 8621 2000) ideally located on the foreshore of Boston Bay, one of the world’s largest protected natural harbours. Stretching from the tip of the Port Lincoln National Park to Point Boston, this magnificent bay covers an area more than three and a half times the size of Sydney Harbour!

We will enjoy dinner on arrival before settling into our comfortable rooms. 

Day Two – MONDAY 24 OCTOBER 2022

This morning we are joined by a local guide who will take us on a tour of the area, learning how Port Lincoln was initially considered as the alternative site for South Australia’s capital before Adelaide was chosen. We will hear about the multi million dollar fishing industry for which this area is renowned, view the massive grain silos and see a statue of the mighty Makybe Diva, the only horse ever to win three Melbourne Cups, plus so much more. After saying farewell to our guide we enjoy morning tea on the foreshore.

The Fresh Fish Place is Port Lincoln’s leading fish processing factory. We embark on a seafood-lover’s guided tour where visitors can learn how local fish are filleted and may even get the chance to see experienced staff opening oysters or scallops. We also have the opportunity to sample a variety of tantalising products. There may be smoked fish on offer, marinated calamari, octopus or soused scallops. Given that Port Lincoln is known for its seafood, it’s only fitting that we enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh fish and chips while here!

This afternoon we board Calypso Star Charters for a relaxing cruise on Boston Bay. We journey through the canals of the Lincoln Cove Marina and Porter Bay, and cruise past Port Lincoln National Park and Boston Island. Weather permitting, we may see the local Sea Lion Colony and we will visit aquaculture sites and taste the fresh produce including tuna, prawns and mussels.

Following the cruise we return to our accommodation with time to relax and freshen up before dinner.

Day Three – TUESDAY 25 OCTOBER 2022

After breakfast we cross the base of the Eyre Peninsula to Coffin Bay, located on one of the most beautiful estuaries in Australia. This area offers unparalleled views of vast expanses of meandering waterways with bays, channels and inlets. Coffin Bay is known for its world-famous oysters, so we take the opportunity to visit a Coffin Bay oyster farm. We cruise the waterway to look at the first original oyster farm in the Bay, enjoying views of the town from a different perspective. We learn about the history of oyster farming from a farmer himself, and have the opportunity to taste fresh oysters which are shucked on board.

Late morning we continue north, around Kellidie Bay and past Lake Wangary to Mount Dutton Bay. With the Marble Ranges as a back drop, this spectacular natural coastline is largely unspoilt. Mount Dutton Bay has quite a history, with both the Woolshed and jetty having been State Heritage listed. They were established in the 1870s by pioneer Price Maurice, who held a land lease that stretched from Elliston to Mount Dutton Bay covering over 100 miles of coastline. At its peak, over 20,000 sheep were shorn in the woolshed, and over 100,000 fleeces departed the jetty on ketches for overseas markets.

The Mount Dutton Bay Woolshed has been lovingly restored and is now home to a museum, gallery and café. We enjoy a light lunch here, with time to wander through the museum and admire the views from the jetty.

We travel back to Coffin Bay to spend the afternoon in the spectacular Coffin Bay National Park. Home to a diversity of landscapes, we will visit sheltered inlets and bays with calm waters, then see the pounding surf of the Southern Ocean in other locations.

After admiring the stunning views, we return to Port Lincoln.

Day Four – WEDNESDAY 26 OCTOBER 2022

This morning, we farewell our hosts and follow the coast to Tumby Bay. This seaside village is home to the Colour Tumby Street Art Festival which attracts street artists from across the globe annually. Many of these works can be seen in various locations throughout the town but the largest, is the mural on the Tumby Bay silos, inspired by a photo of two local boys jumping off the jetty. This impressive piece was completed in April 2018 by Argentian, Martin Ron, after 400 hours work, using 430 litres of paint!

After viewing the silos we head into Tumby Bay to take a look at some of the other stunning art works and enjoy morning tea near the water.

Continuing our travels further north, we arrive at Cowell, situated on Franklin Harbour. This will be our lunch stop today and while here, we also take the opportunity to appreciate more silo art. Completed in 2019, Cowell’s silo features local celebrity Lionel Deer and his camel, who have been part of the local Christmas Pageant for over 30 years!

The next part of our journey takes us to Whyalla, an Aboriginal term meaning “place with deep water”. The third most populous city in South Australia, Whyalla is known as the ‘Steel City’ due to its integrated steelworks and ship building heritage. In 2020, the city unveiled a brand new jetty, that is uniquely-shaped and a showpiece for the local community.

We travel along the highway for a short distance, before detouring east to Point Lowly. The coastal scenery here is stunning and the historic lighthouse and cottages date back to 1883. The lighthouse was originally built to be 15 metres tall, but was extended a further 8 metres in 1909.

The final leg of our travels today brings us to Port Augusta, where our accommodation for the last night of our tour is at the Standpipe Golf Motor Inn (Ph. 08 8642 4033). We settle in before meeting in the restaurant for our last dinner together on tour.

Day Five – THURSDAY 27 OCTOBER 2022

Heading for home today, we travel south down the Spencer Gulf to Port Pirie, South Australia’s first proclaimed provincial city.  It is here we stop to enjoy our morning tea.

By late morning we arrive in Port Broughton, a small town located at the northern extent of the Yorke Peninsula and the east coast of Spencer Gulf.  Its proximity to Adelaide has made it a popular holiday

destination, with the number of people in the town swelling over four times the usual population during the summer holidays.

Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta are the three ‘Copper Triangle’ towns, famous for their shared copper mining history.  We enjoy our lunch in Kadina, the largest town of the Yorke Peninsula before beginning the last leg of the journey home.

We travel the Copper Coast Highway through Port Wakefield and Two Wells and it’s not long before the sights become familiar as we near the outer suburbs of Adelaide. Returning home we have time to reflect on our holiday on the Eyre Peninsula, a place rich in natural resources, wildlife and beauty.
